Abstract

The low quality of students’ ability to understand mathematical concepts makes student learning outcomes at school still unsatisfactory. One of the influencing factors is the presence of anxiety towards learning mathematics. This happens because mathematics lessons are considered difficult to understand and learn. This study aims to find out how mathematics anxiety and the ability to understand mathematical concepts are possessed by students, and to determine whether there is an effect of mathematics anxiety on students’ ability to understand mathematical concepts at Wahidiyah Middle School Jember. This research is an associative research with a quantitative approach using a population sample of 32 respondents. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and tests as well as data analysis. Based on the result of data analysis, it can be concluded that students’ math anxiety is in the high category (43,8%) and the and the ability to understand mathematical concepts is in the medium category (47%) and math anxiety has a significant influence on the ability to understand mathematical concepts in participants studied at Wahidiyah Middle School Jember.
