Abstract

This study aims to design an Internet of Things (IoT)-based cigarette smoke detection system using the MQ-2 sensor and NodeMCU ESP8266 microcontroller. This system is implemented in the Kedunglo 10 Islamic Boarding School environment as an effort to prevent smoking behavior, especially in the bathroom area. When the sensor detects smoke levels above a certain threshold, the system automatically sends a notification via the Telegram application. The test results show that the system is able to detect smoke well at a distance of up to 100 cm, although the highest effectiveness is achieved at a distance of 10–50 cm. This system provides a practical and real-time solution in monitoring smoke-free environments in Islamic boarding schools.
